A NERD AND HIS VOX
At the Harpenden Film Fair in 2014, I acquired a sheaf of documents produced by Peter Feesey. I met Peter a couple of times briefly, as a young nerd. It was clear to me even then that he was the sort of person about whom even people at an exclusively cine nerd gathering would nudge each other and say "Who's that really nerdy bloke?" As will become apparent, to a considerable level of knowledge and skill he added a precise, meticulous, even obsessive, attention to and recording of detail, a determination to communicate that information and a constant wish to improve things, especially the Super Vox. He was an indefatigable correspondent and, I suspect, the terror of suppliers up and down the land in his constant search for new ways of doing things and for detailed information about products he thought might be useful. This was the man who created the sapphire-tipped claw for the Super Vox, and the retro-fitted oil bath for its main gears. In short, the epitome of the nerd's nerd. And he took it all very seriously.
As I came to write this, I was struck by a terrible thought: if Peter had had computers and the internet, surely he would have created a website not wholly unlike Cinerdistan? OMG! AARGH! I may be even worse than I thought!
Nevertheless, there are some practical gems among the huge amount of material Peter produced, of which a small part survives in the sheaf of documents I acquired. Here, then, are some edited highlights of the world according to Feesey.
